The Importance of Regular Dental Care

We believe regular dental care is an important part of a happy and healthy life for a number of reasons. Of course, everyone loves a beautiful smile. But the importance of dentistry goes far beyond cosmetic preferences. Poor dental hygiene can actual pose serious health risks such as:

– Endocarditis happens when bacteria or germs from another area of your body causes an infection of the inner lining of your heart. While endocarditis is rare in people with healthy hearts, it can cause severe damage and even life-threatening complications. Regular brushing and flossing – at least two times a day! – can greatly reduce the bacterial levels in your mouth. Regular professional dental cleanings can also help lower your risk of endocarditis.

– Heart Disease. Some studies have shown a connection between oral bacteria and the inflammation and infections that can cause clogged arteries, heart disease, and stroke.

– Dementia & Alzheimer’s. While research is ongoing into the connection between dementia and Alzheimer’s and gingivitis, there is some evidence that oral bacteria may be able to enter the brain and cause damage that leads to these conditions.

– Respiratory Infections. Pneumonia can be caused by inhaled bacteria, whether that bacteria is already in your mouth or your surroundings. Good brushing and flossing habits as well as regular professional cleanings can prevent you from developing gum disease and an overabundance of oral bacteria.

– Complications for Diabetics. Inflammation and periodontal disease can destabilize your blood sugar. Furthermore, diabetics are more prone to developing gum disease and periodontal disease so careful dental hygiene is especially important if you have diabetes.

– Pregnancy Complications. Poor dental hygiene can contribute to low birth-weight in newborns.

Do you have dentophobia?  Are you scared of the dentist?

Dentophobia or odontophobia, more commonly known as fear of the dentist, is unfortunately a fairly common occurrence that keeps many people from pursuing regular dental care, including preventative care. Avoiding preventative dental care or necessary procedures often leads to the need for more drastic and invasive procedures down the road. But we understand that knowing that fact isn’t always enough to help patients overcome their fears and schedule an appointment.

What many people don’t know is that dentistry has revolutionized over the last few decades. Not only have our techniques and technologies improved drastically in terms of pain management and abatement, most dentists today are acutely aware of patients’ concerns about pain, discomfort, and anxiety, whether it’s during a cleaning or a more invasive procedure. Today’s dentists therefore strive to make their patients as comfortable as possible.

Dr. Sheehan encourages his patients to discuss any concerns or fears they have with him or his staff before any procedure. We have many different techniques to manage pain and anxiety and we are happy to make your visit to our office as worry-free and pain-free as possible.

Dr. Sheehan and his staff operate our services with the goal of minimal discomfort and anxiety-free dentistry.

It is an important part of our mission to provide exceptional service and care to our community, and our belief in the importance of regular dental care.
